Back on the meme-wagon

So it’s my first week of freeeeedom! Woo-hoo! So nice. I’ve been enjoying not being at work/in front of a computer all day, and so I’ve, well, not been in front of a computer all day! Instead, I’ve been getting chores done, getting supplies for my raised bed, updating my website…getting all the stuff off of my to-do list that’s been on there for months! Just today I went and changed the lights in Companions! My main space is lit by 3 lights. Ever since I moved in, one has been burned out. Another has been dull/flickering/not reliably on. Then I have a back area that was pitch black, and it curved to get there so light from the front room didn’t reach there. Well, now I’ve changed the bulbs in the main room so it’s nice and bright, and hung a new light in the back room! Woo-hoo! Damn, look at me go!

What was the point of this post again?

Oh right, memes.

Well, today I’m puppy-less, so I’m going to spend some nice time with all you friendly people in my computer to soothe my loneliness. OK, let’s start out as we always do.

Dear sweet puppy,

I miss you. I have a hard time leaving you behind..even though I know you’re having fun. The new doggie daycare owner wanted another dog on hand to play with her single client for the day, and so you’re getting this day of play for free, but darn was it hard to walk out that door! I can’t wait to come pick you up and get some tired Toby cuddles!

your mommy

Dear whatever is blooming and wreaking utter HAVOC on my system,

GO AWAY. I hate HATE HATE not being able to breath. I almost never got sick as a child, and I never had allergies until a few years ago, so I don’t know how to handle this. Plus I have a hard enough time getting rest! Now you’re stopping me from sleeping peacefully! Please, just die off so I can breathe again. I like breathing. It improves my quality of life.

From someone who’s very sick of you

Dear sun,

Thank you for coming out to play. It is so pleasant being out and soaking up your rays. You can stay around if you’d like. Especially through Sunday when I’m planning a dog beach day.

your neon-white fan

Dear firefox,

What the hell, man? I downloaded the newest update, and now all my tabs are screwy! For awhile there when I opened a link in a new tab it popped up directly to the right of my current tab, and I didn’t flip over to it automatically. That was nice. It was right there, I could open several links and flip through them as each loaded, at my pace. Now the new tab is waaaaay at the end of my list of tabs, and it jumps me over there! So I have to keep scrolling back left to open each link. Let me tell you, I’m exploring a lot less on the internet because I’m sick of it. Please go back to normal. Please?

your #1 user

PS I have my settings set so you should NOT flip to said new tab. And yet you do. What the hell, man? What the hell?

Dear former office,

I can’t believe you guys just drove out a great drafter. He was so easy to work with, you could hand him chicken scratch and stick picturess and he turned them into beautiful, clear drawings. He even double checked things like your welds for you, since he’s seen so many he had an idea if what you called out didn’t make sense, and would just make a note fyi. As everyone knows, you can never have enough critical pairs of eyes on a drawing! But there were a few people who didn’t like his “attitude” (I don’t get it, I never saw any) and you listened to them. I wish you’d asked us others if we liked working with him (YES!) rather than just listening to the whiners. Especially since one of the main whiners was my three-lettered friend, who most of us underlings didn’t get along with in the first place. Sucks so bad for the drafter, and you really screwed him over, basically telling him to quit so he gets no severance or anything. And the job market sucks.

I have lots to be happy about. Let’s focus on it!

I am happy that I can finally spend quality time with my husband! I think I’ve spent more quality time with him in the last week than I had in the previous year. If not, it’s close.

I am happy I can enjoy the sunshine because I’m home while it’s light!

I am happy I can plan and make dinners, rather than hubby just picking something up.

I am happy the grass seed has grown into real live grass in the backyard!

I am happy my hubby is willling to help me build an elevated garden bed in the backyard! Maybe I’ll actually get some crops this year!

I am happy that my puppy is so happy to be home with me more often!

I am happy that Companions is slowly but surely growing! (*knock wood*)

OK, now for the one I’m not so happy about:

*ahem* So. I’m slowly adjusting to being home more. I have a lot more opportunities to walk…but I have to take them. It’s not so much a natural part of my day anymore. Also, I keep playing that forget-to-eat-then-be-starving-and-stuff-my-face game. So in short….not much to show. But I haven’t gained. And quite frankly, if I continue not-gaining, I will be happy!

So, enough stalling.

Last week: 139.5
This week: 139.0

It’s an improvement! I mean, barely, but it is! And that kind of only counts the time that the scale read 139, rather than the 140-141 readings…shhh. This morning I got up and weighed myself..and 139. So of COURSE it’s today’s that counts! Naturally…

Anyway, yay losing weight! Now if I can keep it going. I’m slowly gaining good habits. Snack on fruit (I’ve got it all cut up and ready to go). Drink water instead of..anything else. Get out and go on walks. Park far away from where you’re going. Use the elliptical. It’s all coming. And hopefully it’ll help me lose!

Oh, and I totally take it back. I’m shooting for 130. Not 125. 130. I’m an adult. And my luscious hips may not allow for 125. Really, my goal is to fit into my old clothes, and to be able to buy new ones that I feel pretty in. I’m just thinking that’s going to happen more around 130 than 125.

There’s a Mr. Linky this week! So go to 2 much testosterone or Mommy Drinks Because You Cry and link up!

And finally, a quick cheater meme:

Friday Fun + Give Away Day!

Dear weather gods,

Please choose a season. Preferably a warm, sunny one. The inch of hail covering my car yesterday when I went outside was a bit disturbing for April.

Also, you could let up on Chicago. You have caused my hubby and me to miss flights one too many times.

Thank you for your consideration.

Dear new students,

You are awesome! That was the most fun I’ve had in a class in awhile. Thanks for giving me something to look forward every Thursday to for the next 6 weeks!

Your happy trainer

Dear back/neck/sciatic nerve,

Please stop hurting. Please? I promise that tomorrow I will spend an hour doing nothing but letting someone else make you feel better at Massage Envy. But I would like to be able to get through today w/o the constant pain. (Please?)

PS Thank you for not causing my leg to buckle last night in class. Way to be good for an hour :-)

Dear readers,

Don’t forget to enter my give away! Today’s the last day to enter, and right now you’d have a (roughly) 50-50 chance of winning! I promise the prizes are awesome :-D I also promise that after tonight I will stop mentioning it ;-)

Excited gifter

Actually in a good mood this morning..maybe because it IS morning so nothing’s had a chance to happen yet :-D I’m scraping for things to write about for Dear So and So (since I usually use it to vent ;-).

(10 minutes later) Yup, that was it. The so-early-nothing-has-happened thing. Guess I’m not done with Dear So and So…

Dear three-lettered-friend,

You don’t know how lucky you still are to be in one piece. It’s a good thing I have a lot of self-control. Please stop changing things that cause me to restart all of my calcs on the day the calc book is due. I will do it, but you d@mn well better not blame me if the book isn’t done due to this change. I already refused to start over once due to an unnecessary change you proposed yesterday, but I guess it was in vain. These changes would be less annoying if they weren’t going directly against things our boss has told us. Please, when we decide something just accept it, stop going back and questioning ad-infinium. Also, your “fast and stupid” work style means that I no longer trust anything that comes out of your mouth, because you’ve not really seriously considered it, and I know there’s a 50-50 chance you’ll rescind it and decide you were wrong anyway.

your “subordinate” for just 3 more little weeks…

PS I realize you (finally) had a good catch. If it wasn’t for all the other ones that weren’t good I’ve been dealing with I wouldn’t be upset. Also if it wasn’t the day the book was due that you thought about this. But mainly that first point.

OK. That feels better.

I am happy that I only have 3 weeks to go!

I am happy that I get to “draw” names for my first give-away this evening!

I am happy that my hubby is finally home!

I am happy that yesterday I got, not one, but two new clients!

I am happy that I have another Sunday afternoon doggy playdate on the beach with a friend scheduled!

I am happy that both of my classes this week went really well and helped me remember the joy of training!

I am happy that every single client I have met with this week went out of their way to express out-loud how much progress they saw and how incredibly happy with my services they were!

I am happy that I got a little tiny job that will be fun and hopefully open the door to more!

I am happy that I got to see some of my favorite coworkers yesterday, who I thought would be at their remote location until after I was gone!

See? Happy! That’s way more happy than I can usually pull out! :-D And that was non-stop without really trying!

Aloha, y’all!

My aloha Friday question for you:

If you could enter a give-away with any prize possible, what would be your ideal prize?

Mine are not super common, good fiction books would be the first (hence the topic of my give-away…). I love to read and I love recommendations and I just love love love owning books. Another great one would be puppy-stuff. Treats, toys, training tools, I love it all! I go into a pet store and I can’t leave!

How ’bout you? Let me know in the comments!

And finally, below I’ll put up the pics for Friday Follow and Follow-Me-Friday. That’s all the effort those two take :-D

Friday!!! ::dancey::

Woo hoo, time for another installment of all your favorite memes and mine! Let’s just get right down to it, shall we?

Dear lovely student and wife,

I am sorry, and you guys absolutely LOVE me, but you are the first student I’ve been glad to see go. You are so sure of and proud of your pro-Dog-Whisperer stance, and it gets more extreme every day. You will not listen to any other idea, even if I don’t tell you to drop what you’re doing but merely suggest another alternative to try in addition. It was hurting me to watch. Yesterday, at the last session of class, when your dog was barking in class and your wife was poking her in the neck hissing “tssst!” (which you may have noticed had no effect) I had to turn and walk back around the corner. Your story later that night about your dog barking at a group of people and dogs and your response being to physically force her onto the ground (NOT AN ALPHA ROLL despite what Milan says) and pin her on her back, while she fought you viciously for 3 minutes before calming down and “remembering who is in charge” made my stomach clench. I am glad you didn’t get bitten…this time. I hope your dog, who will be 200 pounds full-grown, does not end up euthenized for a bite because of your training viewpoints.

Good luck. I honestly wish the best of luck to you, for your dog’s sake if nothing else.

Discouraged trainer

Dear April,

Welcome! I am so glad you are finally here! I am losing my tenuous grip on sanity a little more every day, and would appreciate if you could just fly by for me. Sound good? Great!

your biggest fan, who wants to see you gone

Dear hubby,

Have fun on  your trip! I will miss you lots and lots the 6 days you’re gone, but I’m sure you’ll have an awesome time. Don’t worry, Toby will take care of me :-)

Love you more than you know,

your wifey

Dear Easter,

It is so nice to forget about you. After having you as such a big part of my life, what with lent and holy week, it is a very freeing feeling to forget you exist this year. Even after you were no longer important to me, I was still very aware of your approach. I just realized this morning, after the hubby was already gone, that the timing of his trip meant I’d be alone for Easter. I love that I don’t care.

I’m sure we’ll be friends again in the future, when my kids would like eggs and candy.

Until then,

your former fan

Dear Twilight movies,

Please don’t suck as much as I’m afraid you will. But what with the hubby gone, you and me have a date this weekend. I swore I would never do it…but I am (thanks a lot, Erin, for putting up the teaser for Eclipse!).

Hopeful soon-to-be viewer

Dear dysthymia,

Please go away. Please. Or just go on vacation until May. Then I can get help to learn how to live with you peacefully. But seriously, Wednesday was scary. And I really don’t want to have to miss any more work due to you. Or anymore activities I love (this time, agility).

your increasingly desperate roommate in this body

OK, well that was fun! Most therapeutic meme ever. Click on the picture and go try it out! On to some happies.

I am happy that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I’m in my last month!

I am happy that I have a friend to go to the dog beach with.

I am happy that it is the weekend (soon) and I got through another week!

I am happy that I am enjoying my brain candy. There’s a 13-year-old-girl in all of us… (No? Just me?)

I am happy that my puppy loves me.

Phew. OK. Stretching a bit this week. It has been a long one. A looooong one.

One last meme for today:

My question for the week:

If you had a day with no obligations to spend however you wanted, what would you do?

I ask this because I do! Sunday! Hubby’s not home, no clients to meet, just me and the puppy. Hmmm…I think that I shall stay in my pajamas most of the day, watch bad TV and movies, spend a lot of time in bed reading, and eat unhealthy things. Yup, that’s pretty much my ideal day: sloth and gluttony.

How ’bout you?

I <3 Fridays

Here we are at Friday again, another day, another chance for me to totally ignore work and post :-)

Let’s get the ball rolling with some Dear So and Sos…

Dear friends, bloggy and otherwise,

Thank you for being so darn supportive and positive as I’ve had a(n extra) hard time this week. Officially quitting was difficult. Your words of support and encouragement, and hearing you tell me I’m doing the right thing, mean a lot. I cannot hear it enough.

Grateful soon to be former engineer

Dear three-lettered-friend,

Thank you, so much, for making it easier for me to leave. I’m sorry if you’ve started to notice me grinding my teeth when you come and talk to me. That’s just me trying not to explode. Really, though, I’m not sure if you’re reaching to new heights or I just have a lower tolerance at the moment, but it is making the end of April look mighty appealing.

your subordinate..kind of

Dear extremists,

Please stop acting crazy. I don’t really care what someone voted on, that gives you no right to threaten to send snipers to kill their children, as one example.

Whether you like it or not, the bill passed. This is where we are. If you want to fight it, go ahead. But stop focusing on revenge. Can’t we try to come together and move forward on what’s best for the country?

Fed up citizen

Dear lovely student,

Remember last week when I said wrestling with your dog and in the process rolling her on her back wasn’t making her submit, it was play? I’m sorry you had to learn that lesson by having your dog accidentally break your daughter’s skin. If you don’t want her mouthing and wrestling with your daughter, you need to stop letting her do it with you. It’s not dominating her. It’s playing with her. And she likes it, so she’s going to try to do it with all the people she likes.

I’m glad you understand that this is not your dog’s fault.

Frustrated trainer

OK, well those were a bit…negative. Let’s turn that frown upside-down!

I am happy that actually quitting is behind me. The conversation is over.

I am happy that starting in May I can focus on getting myself back to a healthy place.

I am happy that tonight I am meeting with the new doggy daycare owner at a fun event to discuss how our businesses can help each other.

I am happy that I have a husband who is so very supportive of me, even as I cause a drastic hit to our finances.

I am happy that I have found a fun brain-candy series to read, just when I needed it most…even if I didn’t know I would when I started.
Mmmm, love the focus on happiness. Even when I have to work to come up with’s so good.

Hello all you people in my computer!

My question for you this week:

If you could have any job in the world, practical considerations aside, what would it be?

My answer’s pretty obvious to those of you who know me: dog training. Lucky for me, I get to focus on it soon :-) Tell me your answer in the comments!

Friday fun

That’s right, it’s time for another Friday full of fun and memes! Let’s start it out with some letters, courtesy of…

(click the link to see the host page)

Dear lovely student,

You clearly love your dog and are good with her. She’s a very lucky puppy and has a great life. And I agree, positive training is great, but that doesn’t mean you can’t discipline your dog or occaisionally tell her no (like you do your child), as some people on dog boards you belong to have said, frustrating you. But that does not mean Cesar Milan has all the answers. Your dog is not scared of you because you are “alpha,” she’s nervous because you’re big and a bit overpowering at first to a puppy, unlike your wife and daughter. When you are wrestling and she ends up on her back, she is not submitting or being “alpha rolled,” she is playing and happy. That does nothing to establish your dominance. It does everything to establish your bond. However, that’s what really matters in ending up with a well-trained dog.

I’ll just keep showing you the right way to train (which you are totally open to) and let you keep using Milan’s made-up language to describe it. Please just don’t start following his methods.

Frustrated trainer

Dear Cesar Milan,

GET OFF THE AIR. I am so sick of cleaning up your messes.  You have admitted you have no training in dog behavior or training. You have told us you base your methods off wolf-pack dynamic theory, which was thoroughly and completely disproved in the 90s for wolves, let alone dogs. You have no idea what you’re talking about, and while your heart is in the right place, that doesn’t mean you can’t still do enormous damage. I know you’re working with extreme cases of dogs. You can do more long-term in those cases with positive training. Please look into it.  A great starting place would be Victoria Stillwell’s episode “Tiny Tyrant.”

Your methods do more harm than good. For example, if you’ve got a dog terrified of thunderstorms, making her run on a treadmill with video and sound of thunderstorms around until she stops panicking does not help solve the problem, any more than locking someone whose afraid of spiders in a closet full of spiders until she stops screaming and flailing cures her of her fear of spiders. Choking and holding an aggressive dog until he is so exhausted and overwhelmed he stops fighting (but still shows enormous signs of stress) and lets you incorrectly “alpha roll” him does not mean he’s submitted. It means he’s shut down.

There are some things you do right, even if you don’t know it. But the harm outweighs the good in the hands of all your viewers. Please stop.

A trainer who has actually studied modern research and methods and successfully helped dogs who had gotten worse under your kind of training

Dear sunshine,

Thank you for coming back. I have missed you. If you could warm up the air a bit that’d be awesome, but even if not, it’s nice to just have you around.

your biggest fan

Dear hubby,

Thank you for taking care of me. Even when I’m stupid and tired and at the end of my rope. Promise I don’t mean the stupid things I say.

Have fun going sports-crazy the next couple days, and extra thanks for letting me stay home ;-)

Love love love,
your Eileen

Dear former student,

When you came to me at the end of your rope, we worked with your dog and she improved a lot. A lot. I am so proud of both of you. You did a lot for your sweet, happy, silly dog. But ultimately, you decided that your home was not the best place for her, and turned her over to a low-kill shelter.

I do not think less of you for doing this. You gave your dog everything you had, you worked hard for her, and you helped her improve her behavior and her quality of life. You gave her a good, long stretch of time with you, and saved her from death row several years ago. Sometimes, it’s just not safe to keep a dog in your home due to certain situations. She can get better, but it will take time. And sometimes that’s time you don’t have. You were thinking of your other dogs and your family. Your silly girl will find a family whose needs meet her own. I promise I’ll do what I can to help her do so. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for a dog is letting her find a family that is better suited to her.

I’m sorry for the pain you feel. I’m sorry for the situation you were in. I’m sorry you feel embarrassed to talk to me about how you “gave up” on her. You did a good thing taking her in and working with her, and in the end, it just didn’t work out. So you did a good thing in finding her a family that can give her all she needs safely.

I hope you can find peace soon.

your former trainer and always friend

Dear Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert,

Thank you for helping me laugh at the stupidity of politics. It is much preferable to crying. I will be spending some quality time with you soon.

your loyal viewer

*phew!* Wanted to get those first two off my chest for awhile. Listening to my awesome, extremely positve-based student lecturing me (who he thought agreed) on the awesomeness of Milan was just painful. Can’t say anything, because I don’t want to alienate someone who I could show a better way to (and he loves the better way, he just thinks it’s in line with Milan), but if you know me you know that I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut. It’s just discouraging. (It shall be interesting to see how many Milan-defenders I get commenting. Veeeery interesting. Those who know nothing about dog-training tend to love him, it all looks so good!)

Moving right along. Let’s throw in some happiness.

(Again, click on the image to go to the host page)

Mmmm, lets ruminate on some happiness.

I am happy that I got through another week of stress and exhaustion! (I can see this one becoming a theme…)

I am happy that my new client, who I meet tomorrow, had one question for me before she decided to hire me: “Do you like or agree with Cesar Milan?” Thank you for refusing to hurt your aggressive dog. We’ll get her under control.

I am happy that the sun is out!!!

I am happy that I have a low-key weekend coming up where I can relax and train my own puppy!

I am happy that I managed to get up and going this morning earlier and faster than I have in a couple weeks. Yay going home early(er)!

Mmm, that took some thinking this morning. But it’s all good stuff. Love focusing on the positive!

Now a new one, Aloha Friday!

(There’s a pattern, click the link to visit the host)

Here’s how the host describes Aloha Fridays:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

Of COURSE this isn’t a shameless plug to get comments. *cough* But seriously, simple and fun :-) Not that I take it easy posting on Fridays…*scuffs toes*

All right, my question:

If you were getting a dog, what breed would you want?

For me, assuming I was getting a big dog, I’d get a shelter mutt, but likely a pit bull. There are lots in the shelters and they are SO SWEET and eager to please, not to mention great family dogs. And I think they’re beautiful :-) How ’bout you? Let me know in the comments!

And finally, going to play along with Friday Follow again:

A whole heap ‘o’ new memes

I recently discovered, through Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workship, an awesome new blog called My So Called Chaos. Last Friday Miss Angie participated in three different memes, all of which I thought were really cool, so this week I’m going to combine them into one awesome post!

First up: Happy hour!

As far as I can tell, this is just an opportunity to say what you’re happy about this week. Which is awesome. I can always use an excuse to focus on the positive!

I am happy that I made it through this week of exhaustion and stress!

I am happy that tomorrow I get to go on a doggy playdate with a new friend!

I am happy that I am married to the sweetest man on the planet, who takes such good care of me! (For more on why this is on my mind, read this post. Please do. It’s powerful. It’s OK, I’ll wait. *whistles* OK, back and feeling…well…feeling? Onward!)

I am happy that my puppy and I had one of our best weeks at agility! So fun to see a jump forward in progress after weeks of feeling stalled!

I am happy that my final class with three students went well. It was fun. The dogs were good. Everyone was happy. That’s how training should be!

I am happy that this weekend I can go to a dog show and not only see dogs compete in conformation, agility, rally, and formal obedience, but hopefully meet potential new clients! I want to wear a sign that says “Come here for dog training!” Think that would be tacky?

Hmm, as I look back through that’s a little skewed towards dog-oriented happies. Well…I guess that says something about me I already knew!

Next up: Dear So and So…

This just looks fun and therapeutic *rubs hands in glee*

Dear brain,

wtcrap?? I KNOW you’re tired. You tell me all day long. I’m listening. But you gotta work with me. You know those long stretches at night when I lie down and cuddle up to my hubby and puppy and don’t move for hours? That’s your chest to rest. Sleep. Recuperate. So if you could stop running and running and running during that time and just settle down, I think we’d both be happier.

your body

Dear office,

I appreciate you hiring me to do structural engineering when I only had a mechanical engineering degree (and a useless math one). It is what I wanted to do, and I still love the work. But I just cannot handle the stress and the time. I wish it were different. So I will be leaving within the year, to change my life and do more than just get through the days.

This is your heads up. I want to do right by you.

-an exhausted employee

Dear Toby,

I love you. You’re an awesome puppy. Really. But what is up with the last few nights? You know how we let you out right before bed to do your business? And then come up and settle in for the night? Where did the scratching to go back out 30 minutes later come from? Please take care of all your business before we go upstairs. And while I do love you licking me awake, please only do so after my alarm has gone off.

And thanks for your hard work in agility this week. It was noticed and appreciated.

Love you!

-your mama (woof!)

mmmmk, awesome. That is fun!

Last meme is pretty simple: Follow Me Fridays

You put up the link to your blog, and then click on the big ol’ listing of blogs and find some new ones to follow! Hopefully others will find yours and decide you’re awesome. If someone follows you, follow them back (just common politeness). The more you follow, the more followers you get! And we all know how obsessed with followers I am…

So that’s it! If you want to play along click on any of the pictures to go to headquarters. Add your story, add your link, and have some fun!

Just 5.5 hours to go til the weekend! Yee-haw!

I just found another meme…similar to “Follow me Friday” called…wait for it…Friday Follow!

If you hadn’t guessed the idea is basically the same. It’s simple, I’m finding lots of fun blogs through my other investigations, so I’m gonna play along with this one, too!
